Adoptions Cancelled This Weekend – Porter Ranch

Posted by foreverhomepetrescue on October 15, 2008

Our North location has cancelled adoptions for the weekend of October 18 and 19 due to bad air quality at the Porter Ranch Petco location. We will be back the following weekend.

Our hearts go out to the residents of Porter Ranch and surrounding areas who have lost their homes to the Sesnon fire. We have limited availability to help with boarding animals that have been misplaced in the fire, please contact us if your animals need a place to stay for a while.

Adoptions as usual at our South location in Signal Hill / Long Beach.

Meet Our Mascott!

Posted by foreverhomepetrescue on September 29, 2008

Meet Candy (also known as Banana) – the Foreverhome Mascot:

Candy was unfortunate enough to have been “rescued” by a man who had a kennel up in the desert where he took dogs and left them. They had food and water – but that’s really all they had other than a 6×9 dirt pen. Many of them were there for years. This is where Candy spent 3 years of her life before we got her out of there with the intention of finding her a home. Find her a home we did – with the President/Founder of Foreverhome (me!).

Yes, I broke the number one rescue rule…. no keeping. I kept. Just one. She is my ONLY personal dog – and she is my best friend and is with me all the time – at work, at home, at adoptions. Candy has been blind all of her life – she does not have pupils – and she is currently 12 years old. She is the most balanced dog I have ever met – reacting to nothing, she allows puppies and kitties to climb all over her and bite her ears and face.

Candy is absolutely wonderful – and, yes, a Pit Bull. She is the same age as Cesar Milan’s dog, Daddy – and has a similar temperament. She has never met a dog or cat (or rabbit or rat) that she didn’t like… except the feral in my house that whacks her in the nose every now and then.

Her temperament leads me to believe that this dog had love when she was younger. Someone spent a lot of time training her (she knows sit, down, stay, come, shake) and someone spent a lot of time socializing her with other animals. I hope that the family that had her prior to me isn’t still wondering where she is… I can’t imagine losing a dog like Candy. She’s my everything.

In the short time that Candy has lived with me, she has slowed down a lot. She sleeps about 20 hours per day and her hips are starting to give out on her. She has gotten grayer and grayer in the face and often requires help these days to get into the car. She barely has any teeth at all.

Everyone has, in their lifetime, one pet (or maybe two) that are their “heart” – and Candy is my heart dog. There will never be another Candy. I hope she stays with me for many more years… I’m not sure what I’d do without her.

Stop by one of our adoption events in Porter Ranch and you can meet Candy (although the odds are that she’ll be sleeping!)….

I suppose that a dog that becomes blind may miss running at full tilt – but a dog that has been blind all it’s life probably wouldn’t know the difference.

It’s sad, in a way, that this is the case.

Adoption update…

Posted by foreverhomepetrescue on September 20, 2008

Well, let’s see – since the last time we blogged about happy endings (Rayna and Vanna) there have been SEVERAL adoptions.

Aspen finally found her foreverhome after being in rescue for almost 2 years, Biscuit (our special needs seizure Chihuahua) finally found his home after over a year in rescue, Isabella (the Chocolate pit puppy that was tossed from a car window) found a home the first day we showed her at adoptions, an 8 week old Shepherd mix puppy was placed with a previous adopter, four kitties found homes including an adult b/w kitty that’s been with us for almost 2 years….. it’s been a good month!

The Chi pups are separated from mom now (7 weeks old on Sunday!) and they will be going to their new homes in a couple of weeks (LOTS of applications for them!) and hopefully mommy will find a home shortly too.

And, the topper, was our 45-minute foster dog – Miss Lucy. We were contacted by a family moving out of the country and needing to place their recently-from-shelter AmStaff puppy. We posted her on craiglist and an hour later had a fantastic application for her. We picked her up from the previous owners and delivered her directly to her new mommy and daddy… and it was love at first sight.

More updates soon!

Breed-Specific Rescue; A Rant

Posted by foreverhomepetrescue on September 19, 2008

Let us preface this by saying that we are fully aware that all rescue is RESCUE… dogs, cats, birds, wildlife…. and we are also keenly aware that it is all volunteer work and that anyone willing to do ANYTHING to save lives is good, good people. The way we look at it is like this: if you only want to rescue blonde long-haired dogs with one blue eye and pink paw pads… then WHATEVER. At least for those few blonde, long-haired, odd-eyed, pink-pawed dogs you have made a difference…. and making a difference for a few is a far cry better than sitting on your ass and watching tv like the rest of the world.

That being said, however, “breed-specific” is not a term we are fond of.  Not in any forum. We could live with “breed-preferred” or “breed-mostly”. Maybe we could even live with “breed-specific” if someone could explain to us why a dog that looks exactly like the picture on the AKC website is more deserving than a mix with a fantastic temperament? Far too often we’ve heard that a dog was evaluated at a shelter by a B/S rescue and although it had a wonderful temperament it wasn’t “purebred” so it was left behind. This bothers us… but again, WHATEVER. We keep having to remind ourselves that these people are still doing good work. Their cause is no less important, no less difficult, no less emotionally draining than ours. We just don’t understand it, that’s all. Our not understanding it does not make it any less of a fantastic thing they do.

It is also extremely important to mention that MOST B/S Rescue organizations DO work with mixes – and very often with Heinz 57 mixes too. It is not uncommon to see a German Shepherd mix at a Miniature Schnauzer & Friends adoption event, for example. This rant is not about you. If right now you’re looking out your window and seeing five mostly-Golden Retrievers, a Pit mix and a Pointer mix… this isn’t about you, either. Your willingness to take action and save lives is obviously NOT breed-specific. Breed-preferred, maybe – but not exclusive… and you rock.

What set us off on this tangent is an email we got yesterday from a B/S rescue organization. A couple of days ago Foreverhome got an email from a private party who had found a couple of dogs running the streets (a Lhasa-type fluffy dog and a Shepherdy lookin’ thing) and had taken them to SLA shelter in the hopes that their owner(s) would come get them… but alas, as is far too often the case, the dogs are still there and in danger now. Our organization does not have a foster home to take them – so we did the next best thing and we put together an email blast and networked them to the rescue community.

This was the reply we got from one B/S rescue – who shall remain nameless:
“Sorry, we’re a XXXXBREEDXXXX rescue. No sense forwarding stuff like this to us.”

WTF? Why “no sense” forwarding it to you? It makes PERFECT sense to forward it to you. We realize that the dogs in the pictures are not the blonde, long-haired, odd-eyed, pink-pawed dogs that YOU rescue, but are you completely incapable to forwarding the email to your contacts? Are you telling me that if an email isn’t about EXACTLY the breed you work with that these two dogs’ lives aren’t worth five minutes of your time to forward on to others who may be able to help?

In defense and support of B/S rescues we must also say that most mutt rescues have certainly relied on B/S rescue folks to provide us with information about a breed when we come across one – there is certainly something to be said about the knowledge that comes from knowing a breed so well. Most mutt rescues also owe a debt of gratitude to the B/S orgs that have taken dogs from us because they are “your breed”… we thank you for that. We all do the best we can with what we have to work with and, as we’ve said over and over, rescue is not about us – it’s not about you or your breed or your “policies” – it’s about the ANIMALS, dude. Forwarding an email is not so tough a thing. Really, it isn’t.

Mandatory Box Inspection

Posted by foreverhomepetrescue on August 20, 2008

Anyone who has spent time volunteering for a rescue organization knows that – generally – people suck. Doing animal rescue we do not see the best side of people. Yes, every now and then we meet wonderful people who are doing great work in the humane community – but far more often we hear about and/or witness the truly apathetic, insensitive nature of human beings.

Over the years we have seen many, many injustices towards animals – including animals left in trash cans, tied to poles, kicked so hard that they lose an eye, thrown out of cars into traffic, taped up in boxes on the side of the freeway, left in bathrooms at pet stores…. just to name a few. Having seen what we’ve seen, all of us in rescue participate in what we refer to as the “Mandatory Box Inspection”…

This means that whenever we see a box – wherever we are – we will stop and look inside of it. This is to be sure that there are no kittens or puppies or hamsters in the box. We will stop traffic if necessary, pull over to the side of the freeway, go WAY out of our way to have a peek inside of any suspicious box. Once we determine that there is nothing in the box, we wll then tear the box apart so that nothing can be PUT inside the box. It is a habit that we all have. It’s second nature.

This mornig I went to get gas and coffee (as I do every morning – same station, same time) and there by the bus stop was a suspicious box. Of course I walked over to it… and, as happens more often than not, there were kittens in it and a handwritten “FREE KITTENS” on the side. Why in the HELL would someone leave a box of five week old kittens at a bus stop at a busy intersection? Of course that question is rhetorical – because I wouldn’t even want to hear the twisted logic behind it.

Well, needless to say I was late for work and those kittens are now safe and sound in my bedroom and will eventually be placed into foreverhomes through our organization.

The next time you see a random box in a strange place, stop and have a look… you may just save a life.

Doggies goin’ home!

Posted by foreverhomepetrescue on August 13, 2008

This past weekend was a fantastic weekend for us… we have approved applications for TWO doggies…

RAYNA
Our sweet little Rayna (who has been fostered by the Rossi’s for the last couple of months) is going to live in a home that couldn’t be any more perfect. A retired couple that will spend all day fawning over her and keeping her busy. We’re quite sure that she will give them a run for their money with her antics… but in the end, the kisses will win them over! Rayna goes for her home check/delivery tonight! (Tues)

VANNA
The sweet little white/red Pit mix pup is going to her new home on Thursday. Her new mommy is at home all the time, so Vanna will have company and love 24/7. We only had this girl for a couple of weeks… but she is a very special sweetheart and I’m sure her new mommy and daddy will love her and raise her to be a smart, obedient, loving and loyal dog.

Great week for adoptions! Let’s have another!

Bottomless grief and endless joy…

Posted by foreverhomepetrescue on August 13, 2008

We look into their eyes and our hearts melt. So innocent, so trusting. With a sigh we reach for them, snuggle them close and know that at some point they will leave us.

We can already feel bits of our heart breaking off and floating away.

“Never mind,” we say. “It is what it is and we’ll do our best for this group”.

Our mind nudges us none too gently to remember the last time. It slides out the sharpness of the pain of loss to keep us grounded. We turn a blind eye to the reminder.

“This group will be different,” we say, cross with the deliverer of logic. “This group will grow up to be beautiful and loving and will make our badly bruised heart smile again.”

Gradually they slip away, one by one. Small, helpless victims of a society that glances at the hole they leave and then moves on to other more important things.

The tears slide down our cheeks, splashing onto our shirts leaving temporary marks that only faintly mimic the bruises to our souls and our world.

And yet, we would not trade one tear, one loss for the world that others live in. Some have never felt that tiny rumble of infant purrs, nor heard the soft whimper of puppies that dream fearful dreams, not realizing they are, at last, safe.

Our world is sometimes filled with bottomless grief and endless joy. And to balance that is the in between time when we watch a kitten discover the awesome bigness of life, or a feral cat reach out to rub his cheek against a leg.
To see a puppy run for the sheer joy of running is a symphony of motion and trust that is unequaled. To have a dog no longer cringe when we extend our hand makes it all worthwhile.

The fragile circle does indeed break more often than we would like, but when it is complete and whole again it glows with love and hope.

Thanks for letting us post this, Linda

Note: so far the remaining three pups are doing fantastic and will be opening their eyes any minute now! We will post pix of them very soon!
