Iced coffee… bad for trapping!

Yesterday we received an email from someone saying that a tiny black Chihuahua was living in the bushes of the house next door to them – a house that was vacant and had boarded up windows. She feared for the dog because of the neighbors and the busy street, but couldn’t get close enough to it to grab it and wanted some help. We’ve trapped probably thousands of cats over the years, but we’ve not tried to trap a dog… until now.

 

We borrowed a coyote trap from a friend and went over there last night… we set the trap with a couple of cheeseburgers from McDonalds and a blanket over the top of it and waited for the sweet sound of the “SNAP!” We never heard it. What we DID hear was that little dog barking at the trap from 10 feet away… pitty-pattying across the sidewalk right outside the Foreverhome van, barking some more. Little turd.

 

It was too dark to tell if the little black dog was a male or female… but it couldn’t weigh more than 6 or 8 lbs tops. After two hours of waiting we finally packed the trap up and left behind the cheeseburgers. We will try again tonight.

 

Note to self: Large Iced Coffee + two hours sitting in car with no access to restroom = not the best idea!

Weather Weirdness….

Last weekend at our adoption event it was over 100 degrees and we had to mist the dogs and put ice in their kennels all day. All of the volunteers were melting as well. We did have a breeze, but in that heat it was like doing adoptions in a blowdryer.

Then this past weekend it was COLD and rainy. All of the dogs with short hair were wearing sweaters and one of our volunteers was even running around with a blanket wrapped around her.

I wish the weather would make up it’s mind, for crying out loud!

The New Website Launch!

Finally, after months of torturing myself (I am a Graphic Designer and working on anything personal is always difficult) I have finally finished the website design! It is interesting to me that website design includes not only GRAPHICALLY designing a website, but it also means gathering content and “designing” the sitemap… what pages link to what and all that good stuff. It’s a lot of work.

Anyhow, it’s done now and it’s been handed off to our favorite webdude, JohnT. He is taking my very organized bunch of baloney and turning it into a web masterpiece. While he will whine the entire time, he is donating his time and effort and mad skills… and we can’t thank him enough.

One of the things that I am most excited about is that we will have downloadable pdf educational flyers (in both Spanish and English) that will discuss such subjects as Stray Cats, Pit Bulls, Spay/Neuter, Puppymills, Shelters… and many other humane issues. These flyers will be available for anyone to download, alter, hand out, staple to telephone poles or line their birdcages… we WANT you to use them. The more people know, the fewer animals suffer.

In the beginning…

I suppose that this is the beginning. The beginning of our decision to share with anyone who is interested the trials of doing pet rescue in the Los Angeles area. We will be discussing the successes, the failures, the wonderful people in the world and the horrible people in the world that we come in contact with on a daily basis.  Today is May 08, 2008 and our new website – with this blog link – will launch this weekend…. so here we go!
